After India, South Africa reaches Quarters of the #CWC15 defeating UAE clinically.
AB de Villiers played with sparkle and fizz to help South Africa recover after they found themselves in a tricky position and eventually, Proteas notched up a massive total. After South Africa lost the wickets of Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw, de Villiers steadied their innings. He then looked to up the ante by lofting Mohammad Tauqir for a six over extra cover.
In the slog overs, he clouted Mohammad Naveed for a couple of boundaries and followed it up by hoisting a juicy full toss from Amjad Javed over deep square-leg for a six. He also used the crease to keep the spinners guessing. Unfortunately for de Villiers, he was dismissed for 99.
Once de Villiers was dismissed, Farhaan Behardien played a quick-fire knock. David Miller too played a fine hand. He had his share of good fortune, but it was Miller, who helped de Villiers to stitch a crucial century stand. Earlier, Naveed provided the breakthrough by dismissing Amla with a short ball.
Rossouw looked in good touch against the seamers, but was all at sea against the off-spinner, Mohammad Tauqir, and was dismissed by Tauqir. de Kock too didn’t last long. However, de Villiers yet again came to their rescue. South Africa scored 40 runs in the two overs.
Despite Shaiman Anwar and Swapnil Patil playing with pluck and determination to make decent contributions, UAE’s batsmen struggled against a quality attack and hurtled towards a heavy defeat. Once South Africa had piled up a massive total on the board, it felt as if they had already batted their opponents out of the game.
It became apparent when Morne Morkel extracted disconcerting bounce and bowled with good pace to take wickets upfront to leave UAE reeling at 45 for 3. The South African camp certainly would be happy with Morkel’s superlative performance. However, up against a better batting line-up, they may struggle by playing just four regular bowlers. Their fielding too was pretty good. Rilee Rossouw took a blinder of a catch at point to dismiss Andri Berenger.
AB de Villiers was declared man of the match.
South Africa 341 for 6 in 50 overs
UAE 195 for 9 in 47.3 overs
